BASIC STRATEGY: Flip Flop Fundamentals

Can they keep flipping?

A number of 'flip flop' monsters have been printed over the years with a range of Trigger Effects which activate upon Flip Summon. Such 'flip flop' monsters have the ability to Set themselves face-down so that their one manual position change can be used to Flip Summon them. However, given everyone's familiarity with "Book of Moon's" ability to 'reset' many 'once per turn' effects, a question often arises: "Since it flipped face-down, can it use it's effect again?"

The gamestate remembers that these 'once per turn' effects were used to Set the monster before its Flip Summon this turn [REF1, REF2, REF3, REF4, REF5].

BASIC STRATEGY: Triggers When Destroying by Battle

5/5/2021

Comments

“When this card destroys a monster by battle [and sends it to the Graveyard]” effects activate during the End of the Damage Step, but some work differently than others! For additional information, scroll on down to Substep 7. End of  the Damage Step on the Battle Phase page!

“when this card destroys a monster by battle”

  • The trigger condition is met when Substep 4 - Damage Calculation ends and monsters are marked for destruction.
  • These Trigger Effects activate in Substep 7 - End of the Damage Step, when monsters destroyed by battle are sent to the Graveyard.
  • These effects trigger even if the destroyed monster is banished (by "Macro Cosmos").
  • The Monster activating this effect does not need to be face-up on the field in Substep 7 - End of the Damage Step, since it already met its trigger condition.
  • See "XX-Saber Fulhelmknight" vs. "Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter" [REF1, REF2].

“when this card destroys a monster by battle and sends it to the Graveyard”

  • Monsters are marked for destruction in Substep 4 - Damage Calculation but are not sent to the Graveyard until Substep 7 - End of the Damage Step (when the trigger condition for such effects is finally satisfied).
  • These effects will NOT  trigger if the destroyed monster is removed from play (by "Macro Cosmos") instead of going to the Graveyard.
  • The monster activating this effect (ex: "Goyo Guardian", etc) MUST be face-up on the field at the start of Substep 7 - End of the Damage Step, as its trigger condition was NOT met earlier in the Damage Step.

BASIC STRATEGY: Does this Summon start a chain?

Dozens of monsters can Special Summon themselves in Edison Format, but some are just built different.
  • Summon effects (built-in Special Summon) DO NOT START A CHAIN.
    • These may include costs (discarding a WATER monster to Special Summon "Swap Frog").
  • Monster effects that Special Summon DO START A CHAIN.
    • These include Trigger Effects like "Treeborn Frog" and Ignition Effects like "Dark Simorgh".
  • Click HERE for a list of notable monsters!
    • Monsters in the Main Deck section DO NOT START A CHAIN when Summoned by their effect.
    • NOTE: "Quickdraw Synchron" was ruled to start a chain at SJC Edison. READ MORE HERE!
    • Monsters in the Side Deck section START A CHAIN when their effect is activated.

BASIC STRATEGY: Trap Monsters

The Format Rules page has been updated to include rulings for "Trap Monsters". These rulings will be especially useful if you're considering innovating a Deck around "Uria, Lord of Searing Flame" (have you read our last blog post about Special Summons that DO/DO NOT use the chain? Uria makes an appearance)! Trap Monsters that can't be destroyed by battle? "Heavy Storm" resulting in a mere 1-for-1 exchange? Check it out the rules pertaining to "Imperial Custom" in the Individual Rulings & Errata page and let us know if we missed anything!
The 6 Trap Monsters available for play in Edison Format are (from left to right):
- Cyber Shadow Guardna
- Embodiment of Apophis
- Machine King - 3000 B.C.
- Metal Reflect Slime
- Stronghold the Moving Fortress
- Zoma the Spirit
