Rulings and Important Information

Many cards have straight forward effects and activation conditions, and the interactions between two players can flow very smoothly in line with Konami’s official flowchart. However, there exist many exceptions whose card text is sufficiently vague that even experienced duelists can struggle without a ruling consultation. This section will catalogue those cards and relevant interactions which are not immediately obvious, as well as link to resources to better understand the underlying game mechanics. Many individual card rulings established under Upper Deck Entertainment’s management of the game can be found here. See the article “Simultaneous Effects Go On Chain”(SEGOC) for clarification regarding multiple Effects activating simultaneously. Individual cards catalogued herein are listed below and can be searched for via "Ctrl + F".
Missing the Timing and Illegal Activation
Certain cards and effects possess particular activation timing / Trigger conditions which restrict when they may be played. Such cards may only be activated in response to a specific event, and thus can be obstructed by methodical construction of Chain Links. Effects which CAN miss the timing are Optional Trigger Effects on Monster Cards, these effects follow a “When… you can…” structure. Mandatory Trigger Effects, and Optional “If… you can…” Effects will not miss the timing and will activate in a new chain, whether or not their trigger condition was the last thing to happen. There are some instances in which cards may not legally be activated as their trigger condition was not actually the last thing to happen (i.e. Bottomless Trap Hole vs. Drill Warrior’s effect to special summon itself) as a result of the textual conjunctives used in the card effect (see Conjunctives section of this page).
Trigger-like and Ignition-like Effects of Continuous Trap / Spell Cards
Trigger-like Effects of Continuous Spells / Traps may be activated along with the activation of the Spell/Trap itself when its Trigger condition has been met, or whenever its Trigger condition is met while it is face-up on the field. You may not activate the Trigger-like Effect or a Continuous Spell/Trap Card later in the same Chain as the card’s activation, this is because it has not yet successfully resolved. For additional clarification, please refer to the entry on Trigger-like Effects here.
Continuous Trap Cards Treated as Monsters
Often referred to as Trap Monsters, Continuous Traps which Special Summon themselves occupy BOTH a Spell Card / Trap Card Zone and a Monster Card Zone. Additionally, a Trap Monster targeted by Book of Moon will be set to the Spell Card / Trap Card Zone and cannot be activated the remainder of that turn (as this is treated as being the turn in which it was set). For additional clarification, please refer to the Yugipedia entry on Trap Monsters here.

Individual Card Rulings

Picture
Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind
  • The Effect to halve a Monster’s ATK targets. The target’s ATK is halved so long as it remains face-up on the Field.
  • A Monster with 1000 ATK gains 1000 ATK from Axe of Despair and is then Targeted by Gale, its ATK is reduced to 1000, and will remain 1000 even if Axe of Despair is removed from the Field or has its Effects negated. This holds true also if the ATK change is temporary, such as with Rush Recklessly.
  • This Monster includes a built-in Summon which does not start a Chain.
Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor
  • The Continuous Effect which prevents Vayu’s use as a Synchro Material while face-up on the Field CAN be negated by Skill Drain, as it is not a Condition.
  • The second Effect Targets a Blackwing Monster in your Graveyard as cost at activation. Vayu does not Banish itself as cost. This Effect can be activated multiple times per turn.
  • In order to resolve the second Effect, both Vayu and the Blackwing Monster selected as a Target must be Banished by Vayu’s Effect. If either Monster is removed from the Graveyard prior to resolving Vayu’s Effect, the entire Effect resolves without effect: no Monsters are Banished from the Graveyard, and no Synchro Monster is Special Summoned from the Extra Deck.
  • The Effect of Vayu does not perform a Synchro Summon, and can therefore be activated while Discord is active on the Field. Since the Blackwing Synchro Monster Special Summoned by Vayu’s Effect was not properly Synchro Summoned, it cannot be revived by cards such as Call of the Haunted.
D.D. Warrior Lady
  • This Effect is Optional and activates AFTER Damage Calculation.
  • If your D.D. Warrior Lady battles your opponent’s D.D. Warrior Lady, and you both choose to activate their Effects, your D.D. Warrior Lady’s Effect will be Chain Link 1, and your opponent’s will be Chain Link 2. This is also the case where D.D. Warrior Lady attacks a FLIP Monster, the FLIP Monster’s mandatory FLIP Effect will be Chain Link 1 and D.D. Warrior Lady’s optional Effect may be Chain Link 2. For further clarification on mandatory and optional Effects, see the article on SEGOC.
Dark Ruler Ha Des
  • This card’s Continuous Effect also affects itself so long as it is being treated as a Fiend-type Monsters while on the Field. Since this is a Continuous Effect it will not Trigger upon destroyed a Monster and thus CANNOT be negated by Divine Wrath, but it CAN be negated by Skill Drain.
  • Effects which activate after Damage Calculation are negated, this is because the Monster has been marked for destruction at the end of Damage Calculation. This includes FLIP effects (such as Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter), and Trigger Effects (such as D.D. Warrior Lady).
  • Effects of Monsters that activate in the Graveyard WILL be negated. This includes the battle tutors (Mystic Tomato, Pyramid Turtle) as well as cards which revive/recycle themselves (Treeborn Frog, Plaguespreader Zombie, Sinister Serpent).
Debris Dragon
  • The Effect to Special Summons a Monster from the Graveyard Targets a Monster at activation.
  • This card has two Conditions (Rule Effects), these are not Continuous Effects and therefore CANNOT be negated.
  • Monsters Special Summoned by this Effect may legally attempt to activate their Effects (such as Lonefire Blossom), however they will resolve without Effect as their Effects were negated by Debris Dragon.
Doomcaliber Knight
  • This is a Mandatory Quick Effect which MUST activate whenever its Trigger condition is met (including during the Damage Step).
  • This Effect cannot activate while Mask of Restrict is active.
  • Doomcaliber Knight Tributes itself as cost when activating its Effect.
  • Doomcaliber Knight will still activate and successfully resolve its Effect while Skill Drain is active.
  • If multiple Doomcaliber Knights are face-up on the Field, and a Monster activates its Effect, they will all activate and Tribute themselves forming a Chain.
  • If multiple Effects are activated simultaneously, after determining the order of Effects and building a Chain; Doomcaliber Knight will tribute itself in response to whichever Monster Effect was last in the Chain
    • Example: Player A tributes Sangan to Summon Zaborg the Thunder Monarch, both mandatory Effects activate simultaneously so Player A declares Zaborg as Chain Link 1 and Sangan as Chain Link 2. Player B’s Doomcaliber Knight then Tributes itself as Chain Link 3 to negate the Effect of Sangan.
Elemental Hero Prisma
  • This card’s Effect only allows it to gain the printed name of the sent Fusion Material Monster. If a Tuner is sent to the Graveyard as cost, Prisma does not gain the Tuner category.
  • If you reveal Rainbow Neos from your Extra Deck, you may only send (as cost) Elemental Hero Neos from your Deck to the Graveyard. You cannot send Rainbow Dragon or Rainbow Dark Dragon, as the card actually lists "1 'Ultimate Crystal' monster" as the other Fusion Material. For additional clarification, see the entry for Rainbow Neos here.
  • This Effect can only send Monsters that are specifically named as Fusion Material for the revealed Fusion Monster.
Gorz, the Emissary of Darkness
  • If you have more than 1 copy of Gorz in your Hand when receiving damage, you may only activate (and Special Summon) one. This holds true also if the other card in your Hand is Tragoedia, only one such monster may attempt to activate its Effect (and special summon itself).
  • Gorz’ Trigger Effect is Optional and can therefore miss the timing if damage is inflicted to your Life Points in Chain Link 2 or higher, as the last thing to happen will be the resolution of whatever effect was Chain Link 1.
  • If Player A declares a direct attack and deals battle damage with Spirit Reaper, Spirit Reaper’s Effect may be activated as Chain Link 1 and Player B’s Gorz may be activated as Chain Link 2 in line with SEGOC.
  • An Emissary of Darkness Token targeted by Shrink has its ATK reduced to 0.
Honest
  • Honest’s Effect to increase a Monster’s ATK is a Quick Effect and can be placed as Chain Link 2 or higher. This Effect activates in the hand and cannot be negated by Light-Imprisoning Mirror.
  • Honest’s Effect does not Target the LIGHT Monster.
  • Sending Honest from the hand to the Graveyard is the activation cost for this Effect.
  • If a Monster whose ATK has been modified by Honest becomes targeted by Shrink, the monster’s ATK becomes half it’s Original ATK, and then the ATK increase from Honest is re-applied.
King Tiger Wanghu
  • This is a mandatory Trigger Effect which activates and starts a Chain whenever a Monster(s) with 1400 or less ATK is Normal or Special Summoned by either player. This supersedes Ignition Effect Priority of the Turn Player.
    • Example: Player A controls a face-up King Tiger Wanghu. Player B Normal Summons Exiled Force. The Mandatory Trigger Effect of Wanghu activates as Chain Link 1, starting a Chain. Player A is unable to Tribute Exiled Force to activate its Ignition Effect, as such Ignition Effects cannot be activated as a Chain Link of 2 or higher.
  • Existing ATK modifiers (such as Field Spells, Quickplay Spells, or Continuous Spells and Traps) take effect on Monsters summoned before King Tiger Wanghu resolves and verifies the Monster(s)’s ATK, this includes King Tiger Wanghu itself!
    • Example: Cyber Jar resolves and Special Summons King Tiger Wanghu and Bladefly face-up simultaneously. Wanghu’s Trigger Effect activates immediately; both are destroyed as they have 1400 ATK or less.
Koa’ki Meiru Drago
  • The End Phase Maintenance Cost of Koa’ki Meiru Monsters CANNOT be negated.
  • If Player B resolved Brain Control to gain control of Player A’s Koa’ki Meiru Drago, they may choose to not reveal a Dragon-type Monster during the End Phase prior to resolving Brain Control and restoring control of Drago to Player A.
  • Future Fusion may be legally activated while Koa’ki Meiru Drago is face-up on the Field, even if a LIGHT or DARK Fusion Monster is revealed. However, if Koa’ki Meiru Drago is still face-up during the second Standby Phase after Future Fusion’s activation, the Fusion Monster will not be Special Summoned.
  • LIGHT and DARK Monsters cannot be Special Summoned at all. This includes cards and Effects which would Special Summon a LIGHT/DARK Monster into face-down Defense position.
Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer
  • The Continuous Effect which prevents your opponent from Banishing cards in the Graveyard(s) prevents them from activating certain cards and Effects. This means they cannot Banish a Mezuki from their Graveyard as cost, nor may they activate Book of Life Targeting a Monster in your Graveyard to Banish at resolution.
  • The Effect to Target up to two Monsters in your opponent’s Graveyard and Banish them is a Trigger Effect which activates after Damage Calculation.
Light and Darkness Dragon
  • This card possesses a Summon Condition which prohibits its Special Summon.
  • This card is treated as both LIGHT and DARK attributes while it is face-up on the Field, and therefore will be affected by any cards and Effects which affect LIGHT or DARK Monsters.
  • This card’s Effect to negate the activation of a card / Effect is a Trigger Effect, and may only be activated once per Chain. This Effect will still Trigger and add a Chain Link even if Light and Darkness Dragon has less than 500 ATK, allowing your opponent to react with Divine Wrath or other cards.
  • If the Effect to negate a card / Effect’s activation has been activated several times, and Shrink is Chained to Target Light and Darkness Dragon, the original ATK of Light and Darkness Dragon is halved, then the ATK losses from those previously activated Effects are subtracted.
    • Example: The second Effect of Light and Darkness Dragon has been applied twice (-500 x 2 = 1000 ATK and DEF lost) and Shrink was used to halve Light and Darkness Dragon’s ATK. Shrink’s Effect is applied, halving the ATK from 2800 to 1400, and then the ATK is corrected down by 1000 as a result of the cost paid for previous activations of Light and Darkness Dragon’s Effect, resulting in a total of 400 ATK and 1400 DEF. When Shrink’s Effect wears off at the end of the turn, Light and Darkness Dragon’s ATK is restored to 1800 (2800 – 1000 ATK).
  • If Light and Darkness Dragon if removed from the Field (via Interdimensional Matter Transporter) or flipped face-down (via Book of Moon), all loses of ATK and DEF are reset and are not reapplied when it is returned to the Field / flipped face-up.
  • This card’s third Effect is a Trigger Effect which activates whenever the Monster is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, whether it was destroyed on the Field, in the Hand, or in the Deck. This Effect Targets 1 Monster in its owner’s Graveyard to Special Summon. You destroy all cards you control when resolving this Effect, even if the Target was removed from the Graveyard before resolution of this Effect.
Plaguespreader Zombie
  • Placing a card from your Hand on top of the Deck is part of this card’s activation cost.
  • Banishing Plaguespreader Zombie by its lingering Effect does not start a Chain. This Effect can be reset by flipping Plaguespreader Zombie face-down, allowing it to be sent to the Graveyard when it leaves the Field.
Quickdraw Synchron
  • Sending 1 Monster from your Hand to the Graveyard is not a cost, it is part of a built-in Summon which does not start a Chain.
  • This card has two Conditions (Rule Effects), these are not Continuous Effects and therefore cannot be negated.
Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter
  • Both Effects are triggered when Ryko is flipped face-up. If the Effect to destroy is activated, a Target must be selected for destruction at activation.
  • These Effects resolve SEQUENTIALLY, with the Effect to mill three cards being the last thing to happen.
    • Example: Player A controls a face-up Dimensional Alchemist. Player B Flip Summons Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter and activates its FLIP Effect, Targeting Dimensional Alchemist at activation. The Chain resolves with Dimensional Alchemist being destroyed, and then with Player B sending the top three cards of their deck to the Graveyard [among which was Peten the Dark Clown]. Since the last thing to happen was Player B sending the top three cards of their Deck to the Graveyard, Player A CANNOT activate Dimensional Alchemist’s Trigger Effect, however, Player B CAN activate Peten’s Trigger Effect, Banishing itself as cost to Special Summon another Peten from the Deck.
Thunder King Rai-Oh
  • This card’s Effect to negate a Special Summon that does not start a Chain does not Target the Monster (as it is not yet considered successfully Summoned, and is not treated as being on the field).
  • The activation cost of this Effect is sending Thunder King Rai-Oh from the field to the Graveyard. This effect cannot be activated while Dimensional Fissure, Macro Cosmos, or Banisher of the Radiance are face-up on the field.
  • Since this Effect only responds to Special Summons which do not start a Chain, it cannot be activated as a Quick Effect in a Chain. Special Summons that may be responded to are Contact Fusion Summons, Synchro Summons, and built-in Special Summons such as Chaos Sorcerer. Thunder King Rai-Oh CANNOT prevent the Trigger Effects of Stardust Dragon and Drill Warrior which result in their Special Summons, nor can it be activated to negate Call of the Haunted.
  • The Continuous Effect which prevents the adding of cards from the Deck to the Hand (except by Drawing them) can be circumvented by Gold Sarcophagus.
Volcanic Shell
  • A single copy of Volcanic Shell may activate this Effect numerous times in a turn so long as it is removed and later returned to the Graveyard between uses.
  • Each copy of Volcanic Shell in your Graveyard may activate this Effect once per turn while it remains in the Graveyard so long as there remain copies of Volcanic Shell in your Deck.
Black Garden
  • The Effect which halves the ATK of a Normal / Special Summoned Monster is a Trigger-like Effect. This Effect still activates to Special Summon a Rose Token when a Monster is Special Summoned face-down, but that Monster’s ATK is not halved.
  • Monsters whose ATK has been modified by Black Garden remain modified even if Black Garden is removed from the Field.
  • The Effect which halves ATK and generates Rose Tokens will still Trigger even when neither player is permitted to Special Summon Monsters, such as when Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo is face-up on the Field, or if Scapegoat was previously activated in the turn.
  • The Ignition-like Effect to Special Summons a Monster from the Graveyard selects a Target at activation. This Effect starts a Chain. The destruction of Black Garden and all face-up Plant-type Monsters takes place during the resolution of the Effect and is not an activation cost. Black Garden must successfully destroy itself and an appropriate number of Plant-type Monsters in order to Special Summon the Target. If a card / Effect is Chained that removes Black Garden from the Field, the Effect resolves without Effect: no Plant type Monsters are destroyed and the Target remains in the Graveyard.
  • Royal Oppression cannot be activated in response to the activation of Black Garden. However, Royal Oppression may be activated in response to either the Trigger-like or Ignition-like Effects of Black Garden, as these would result in the Special Summon of a Monster.
Black Whirlwind
  • This Optional Trigger-like Effect starts a Chain in the Summon response window. In order to resolve, both Black Whirlwind and the Normal Summoned Blackwing Monster must remain face-up on the Field.
  • Black Whirlwind will still successfully search a Monster even if control of the Normal Summoned Blackwing changes before resolution of Black Whirlwind’s Effect (so long as that Monster remains face-up).
  • Black Whirlwind verifies the ATK of the Monster as it exists on the Field during resolution, not the printed ATK. Therefore, if some Effect modifies the Blackwing’s ATK prior to resolving the Effect of Black Whirlwind, it is that modified ATK which is used to determine which Monster may be added from the Deck to the Hand.
  • If you control multiple copies of Black Whirlwing, all may be activated in a single Chain simultaneously in response to the successful Normal Summon of a Blackwing Monster.
Cold Wave
  • Cold Wave also prevents the activation of Ignition-like and Trigger-like Effects of Spells and Traps which are already face-up, such as Ultimate Offering, Blaze Accelerator, and Royal Oppression.
My Body as a Shield
  • Though later reversed, My Body as a Shield was ruled to negate and destroy an opponent’s Royal Oppression which was already face-up.
    • Example: Player A controls a face-up Royal Oppression. Player B Normal Summons Debris Dragon and activates its Trigger Effect as Chain Link 1, Targeting a Lonefire Blossom in the Graveyard at activation. Player A activates the Trigger-like Effect of Royal Oppression as Chain Link 2 to negate the Effect and destroy Debris Dragon. Player B activates My Body as a Shield as Chain Link 3 and pays 1500 Life Points as cost. The Chain resolves with My Body as a Shield negating the Effect and destroying Player A’s Royal Oppression, and subsequently Player B’s Debris Dragon successfully Special Summoning Lonefire Blossom from the Graveyard in face-up Attack Position.
  • This card may only be activated when a Monster that is already on the field would be destroyed by some card Effect. This card CANNOT be used to negate the activation of Magical Dimension, or other such cards with optional Effects that might destroy a Monster(s).
  • Paying 1500 Life Points is the cost to activating this card.
  • “when your opponent activates a card with an effect that would destroy 1 or more monster(s) on the field” is the activation condition. This card may only be activated in direct succession to that card which includes an Effect that would destroy at least one Monster on the Field.
Pot of Avarice
  • Synchro and Fusion Monsters may be Targeted by Pot of Avarice. They are returned to the Extra Deck during the resolution of this Effect.
  • All five Targets MUST remain in the graveyard in order to successfully resolve Pot of Avarice. If even a single of the declared Targets is removed from the Graveyard
    • Example: Player A activates Pot of Avarice and declares five Targets at activation, Player B Chains D.D. Crow from their Hand, discarding as cost and declaring as Target one of the five Targets declared by Player A. The Chain resolves with D.D. Crow successfully Banishing one of the Targets for Pot of Avarice, and then Pot of Avarice resolves without Effect as it cannot successfully shuffle all five Targets back into the Main / Extra Deck. Player A does not Draw two cards.
  • Pot of Avarice cannot be activated while Transmigration Break is active. If Transmigration Break is activated in response to Pot of Avarice, those targets will be Banished instead of being shuffled into the Main / Extra Deck(s), and since those cards were not shuffled into the Deck(s) the player does not draw two cards (see Conjunctives).
Icarus Attack
  • A face-down Winged-Beast CAN be Tributed as this card’s activation cost.
  • You MUST select 2 cards as Targets when activating this card. You CANNOT select Icarus Attack itself as one of those Targets. Both Targets will be destroyed, even if one is a Spell / Trap Card which was Chained in response; or if one Target is removed from the Field, the other will still be destroyed by Icarus Attack.
Imperial Iron Wall
  • If Imperial Iron Wall is already active, cards like Allure of Darkness, Nobleman of Crossout, Book of Life, and Bottomless Trap Hole CANNOT be activated.
  • If Imperial Iron Wall is Chained in response to Allure of Darkness, the player who activated Allure of Darkness needs only reveal a DARK Monster in their Hand while resolving the Effect. They do not discard their entire Hand unless they fail to reveal a DARK Monster.
  • If Imperial Iron Wall is activated in response to Bottomless Trap Hole or Nobleman of Crossout, the Monster is still destroyed but it is not Banished (also, Nobleman will not Banish any cards from the Deck).
  • If both Dimensional Fissure / Macro Cosmos and Imperial Iron Wall are active on the Field, the Effect which PREVENTS an action (Imperial Iron Wall) takes precedence.
Macro Cosmos
  • Special Summoning Helios – The Primordial Sun is an optional Effect; you are not required to play Helios in order to activate Macro Cosmos. Macro Cosmos must remain face-up on the Field in order to successfully resolve this Effect and perform the Special Summon of Helios.
  • If Macro Cosmos is active and a Monster is Tributed to Normal Summon Jinzo, the Tributed Monster is still Banished.
  • It is impossible to “send / discard a card(s) TO THE GRAVEYARD” while Macro Cosmos or Banisher of the Radiance are active. It is impossible to “send / discard a Monster(s) TO THE GRAVEYARD” while Dimensional Fissure is active. This prevents cards from even attempting to activate their Effects if part of their cost or effect specifically involves sending a card(s) to the Graveyard. Some examples include: Herald of Orange Light, Celestia, Lightsworn Angel, Abyss Soldier, and Jowgen the Spiritualist. This does not prohibit the activation of cards which merely require you to DISCARD a card, such as Magic Jammer. For additional clarification on effects which discard cards, see the entry here.
  • If Macro Cosmos is active when Archlord Kristya would be sent from the Field to the Graveyard (and Banished), Archlord Kristya’s Effect successfully triggers and places it back on top of the Deck.
Royal Oppression
  • Its Trigger-like Effect may be activated in unison with the card’s own activation during the Summon negation window of a built-in Summon or the activation of a card which would perform a Special Summon. If Oppression is activated (flipped face-up) but its Trigger-like Effect was not activated, the Effect may not be activated in that same Chain as the card itself has not yet successfully resolved.
  • Royal Oppression must remain face-up on the Field in order to resolve its Effect to negate the activation of a card, Effect, or built-in Summon.
  • Royal Oppression may only interact with Future Fusion when it is activated when its lingering Effect is activated.
Starlight Road
  • This card’s Trigger condition is the activation of a Spell or Trap card, or of a Monster’s Effect which would simultaneously destroy two or more cards on the Field. This activation condition needs only be true when Starlight Road was activated, not at resolution.
  • This card utilizes a “then” conjunctive (Do A… THEN Do B…), meaning that the Optional Effect to Special Summon a Stardust Dragon from your Extra Deck relies on Starlight Road successfully negating the Effect AND destroying the card. Failure to perform either of these prevents the user from resolving the final portion of the Effect.
    • Example: Player A activates Heavy Storm to destroy 4 set Spells/Traps on the Field, Player B activates Starlight Road in response, Player A responds with Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Heavy Storm. The Chain resolves with Mystical Space Typhoon destroying Heavy Storm, and Starlight Road negating the Effect of Heavy Storm. Since Heavy Storm was not destroyed by Starlight Road, Player B cannot proceed to Special Summon a Stardust Dragon from the Extra Deck.
  • Starlight Road must be activated directly after the Effect in Chain which would destroy two or more cards on the Field.
  • Starlight Road does not negate the activation of a card, only its Effect, and therefore cannot be activated during the Damage Step to counter Red Dragon Archfiend’s Effect.
  • Starlight Road cannot be activated when it is uncertain how many cards will be destroyed.
    • Example: Player A controls three set Spell / Trap cards, including a set Starlight Road. Player B controls two Elemental Hero monsters and successfully Normal Summons Elemental Hero Stratos. Player B activates Stratos’ Trigger Effect which would “destroy Spell and Trap cards on the field UP TO the number of Hero monsters (except this card)” they control. Since the Effect does not guarantee that any number of cards would be destroyed, Starlight Road CANNOT be activated.
Ultimate Offering
  • This card received an errata in 2007’s Machine Re-Volt Structure Deck to elucidate its Effect.
  • Paying 500 Life Points and declaring activation of this card’s Ignition-like Effect are part of the activation cost. This card must remain face-up on the Field in order to resolve this Effect.
  • This Effect can be activated during your Main Phase or your opponent’s Battle Phase.
  • Since the Normal Summon / Set of a Monster takes place immediately after this Effect resolves, it is possible for Optional Trigger Effects (such as Red Gadget) to miss their activation timing. If the last thing to happen was not the resolution of Ultimate Offering’s Effect (if Ultimate Offering’s effect was Chain Link 2 or higher), then the last thing to happen will be whatever occurred while resolving Chain Link 1.
  • If the Effect to Normal Summon is activated as Chain Link 2 or higher, Bottomless Trap Hole will not meet its activation timing as the last thing to happen was the resolution of whatever Effect resolved as Chain Link 1, not the Normal Summon of a Monster with 1500 or more ATK.
  • If Ultimate Offering is face-up, you may activate its Effect multiple times in the same Chain. This differs from Double Summon, where only a single additional Normal Summon is granted even if multiple copies of Double Summon were activated.
  • The Normal Summon granted by Ultimate Offering may be used to perform a Tribute Summon, in which case the Monster offered as Tribute remains on the field until the resolution of Ultimate Offering’s Effect to perform the Normal Summon of a Level 5 or higher Monster.
Drill Warrior
  • This card’s Ignition Effect to halve its own ATK starts a Chain, but its ATK is not halved until resolution. This means it can still fall prey to a Chain Link 2 Bottomless Trap Hole.
  • This card’s second Ignition Effect to Banish itself does not Discard for cost, it occurs simultaneously with Drill Warrior Banishing itself. This allows for Monsters with Optional and Mandatory Trigger Effects to meet their activation timing (such as the Dark World cards), so long as Drill Warrior’s Effect was Chain Link 1 and was not negated.
  • This card’s Trigger Effect to Special Summon itself proceeds SEQUENTIALLY when resolving: first Drill Warrior is Special Summoned, THEN one Monster in your Graveyard is added to your Hand. Thus the last thing to happen was not the Special Summon of a Monster, and so Torrential Tribute and Bottomless Trap Hole CANNOT be activated.
  • You DO NOT declare (Target) which Monster in your Graveyard you wish to return to the Hand, you make this decision while resolving the Effect.
