Six Samurai are a powerful archetype of monsters which gain effects through teamwork on the field. In fact, teamwork plays a central role in this archetype’s playstyle, as The Six Samurai are capable of sacrificing themselves to protect their brothers from destruction. Their Continuous Spells accelerate their strategy through draw power and deck searching. Additionally, their long game is astounding as they possess the means of mass revival and resource recycling through numerous in-archetype cards. This band of samurai have the tools to overcome any challenge, and their ethos is one of Solidarity! Seize the tools and skills to overcome your opponent’s best laid plans!
Gateway of the Six is responsible for the success of the Six Samurai archetype’s success across its numerous iterations and plays an essential role in searching for the appropriate Six Samurai monsters to address whatever situation your opponent presents you with. While another Six Samurai monster is on the field: Hand of the Six Samurai can tribute 1 Six Samurai monster to destroy 1 monster on the field; Irou can destroy set monsters he attacks neutralizing potential walls and Flip effects; Kamon can destroy face-up Spells/Traps; Yaichi can destroy set Spells/Traps; and Zanji can destroy monsters he battles at the end of the Damage Step. Grandmaster is a searchable extender whose built-in summon can see him hit the field so long as you control a Six Samurai monster. Additionally, Grandmaster and Gateway enable the recycling of Six Samurai monsters in the graveyard. As all members of this band of samurai are warriors they benefit from Solidarity, making even your weakest normal summoned monster have more than 2000 ATK! While Gateway utilizes its bushido counters to search out and buff your samurai, Six Samurai United trades bushido counters to draw cards and assist in diffing for non-searchable cards to out resource your opponent. Such a strategy benefits from the incorporation of Starlight Road as a means of protecting important Spells and Traps while also providing access to an optional boss monster. The Six Samurai strategy is very strong by virtue of Grandmaster of the Six Samurai’s role as a searchable extender that can summon himself to the field for free and, in so doing, grant access to the unique powers of your other Six Samurai monsters.
Six Samurai's Strengths and Weaknesses
Six Samurai’s main drawback is the dependence on maintaining two Six Samurai monsters on the board during your turn. While each successful Summon of a Six Samurai monster places 2 bushido counters on Gateway, 4 bushido counters are required in order to search for a Six Samurai monster. This strategy is therefore notably slower than that offered by Blackwings, with their Black Whirlwind. Additionally, whereas Grandmaster of the Six Samurai is the only Samurai with a built-in Special Summon, numerous Blackwing monsters have built-in Special Summons or the ability to generate resources from the grave. While Six Samurai may benefit from the use of Rivalry of the Warlords to provide an element of stun against combo decks, such a strategy offers no protection against the speed of monotype decks like Machina Gadgets or Blackwings.
